You have the ring. The date is selected. You picked your photographer… but now you’re not sure where to start with planning your engagement session. Here are six ways you can make your engagement session photos unique to you and your fiancé! You can run with one idea or combine a couple of them for a completely YOU-nique way to showcase your relationship during your engagement session and announce to the world, “I’M GETTING MARRIED TO THE BEST PERSON EVER!”
1. Your First Date Spot
How romantic is it to return the the spot that you met or had your first date? I love love love when high school sweethearts want to photograph with their letterman jackets or when we get to visit the college campus where two people found love. Maybe you frequently go to a wine bar or brewery for happy hour dates. It’s a great way to memorialize the spot where it all started or you fell in love!
2. Joint Hobbies or Interests
What are some of the things you guys to together? Do you play in a sports league? Do you love the great outdoors and hiking? Or simply, maybe you two just have a furry friend that you both absolutely adore. In other words, joint hobbies or interests are a great spot to start finding some common ground for a fun engagement session that is all about the two of you. The engagement session we photograph the most of is when couples bring their doggo to the session. By all means, we certainly have fun with your four-legged friends!
3. Movie or TV Show Theme
There are some super sweet engagement sessions out there in Pinterest world where the couple dresses up as the main characters from the movie ‘the Notebook’ or ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ and theme their engagement session photos around key plot points from the movie. This is a super fun idea if you have a bit of a goofy adventurous spirit – I mean, who doesn’t love a good costume and pretending to be a movie star? One session that comes to mind that we did was a ‘Walking Dead’ themed engagement session – complete with real zombies and a zombie hunting jeep!
4. Combine Your Two Favorite Hobbies
These are some of my most favorite kinds of sessions. All things considered, everyone will bring unique traits, hobbies, and interests to a relationship. Realistically, two people live a lifetime prior to meeting and then their lives are joined forever once they say ‘I-do.’ I love love love taking two hobbies that come from two different walks of life and smashing them together to create something super fun. For example, the image below is from a groom who loves to hunt, and a bride who loves to shop, so obviously at their engagement session we decided that together they should go hunting for shoes!
5. Dream Date
There is nothing more powerful than a dream and a little ambition! This duo dreamt of having their engagement photos taken inside their favorite stadium – so we did it! These two got the pleasure of walking onto the field where their favorite football team plays their home games. Being the only ones in the stadium is such a cool experience. What is your dream date? Horseback riding on the beach? Volunteering at an animal shelter? Walking a tight rope? Not to mention, the sky is the limit when it comes to what we can dream up together!
6. All My Favorite Things
Try combining all the things you love into one engagement session. Ask yourself about the five W’s (who, what, where, why, when) and see how we can put them together. For example, this duo decided to bring together all their favorite things (their dogs, matching outfits, European inspired backdrop, during golden hour) for a totally intimate and personal engagement session.
